Terms of use

Last updated 19 August 2026

These terms cover your use of the Hobby Workshop website and app. By using either, you accept them. They are governed by the laws of Malaysia.

What we are, and what we are not

The Hobby Workshop does two separate things. We operate a marketplace that introduces vehicle owners to independent mechanics, and we operate a physical workshop in Petaling Jaya where bays can be rented and where certified mechanics work.

Where a job is carried out by an independent mechanic through the marketplace, the contract for that work is between you and that mechanic. They set their own rate and they are responsible for their own work. We are not the repairer in that arrangement, and we do not employ them.

Bids and prices

A bid is a firm price for the scope described in it. If the job turns out to need work outside that scope, it stops and you are asked to approve the additional cost in writing before anything further is done. You are never committed to work you did not approve.

Parts supplied by us are charged at the price we paid our supplier, and the supplier invoice is available on request. Any figures shown on our website that illustrate a markup are examples, not quotations.

Payment

Payment is taken through the app when a job is agreed, and is processed by Stripe. We take a commission of twenty per cent of the labour value of each job. We take no commission on parts. Bay rental and workshop-supplied consumables are charged separately and in full to us.

Warranty

Work performed by a Hobby Workshop certified mechanic carries a thirty-day written workmanship warranty from the day the job closes. It covers the quality of the work. It does not cover parts you supplied yourself, damage caused by continued use after a fault appears, or ordinary wear. Warranties given by a part manufacturer are passed through to you and are claimed against that manufacturer.

Nothing in these terms removes rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 or any other law that cannot be excluded by agreement.

Using the DIY bays

If you rent a bay you work on your own vehicle at your own risk. You must follow the safety instructions given on site and the directions of workshop staff. We may refuse or stop a booking if work is being done unsafely. You are responsible for damage you cause to the premises or to equipment.

Your account

Keep your login details to yourself, and give us accurate information. We may suspend an account that is used to post fraudulent jobs, to abuse another user, or to move business off the platform to avoid commission after being introduced through it.

Our liability

We are responsible for our own acts and for work done by our certified mechanics under the warranty above. We are not liable for the acts of independent mechanics beyond our obligations as the operator of the marketplace, for loss of profit or loss of use, or for events outside our reasonable control. We do not limit liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.
